Friday Favorites #1 | 4.5.19

Friday Favorites / Friday, April 5th, 2019

Happy Friday everyone! I’m especially happy to see Friday this week for two reasons. First reason being that this week has been super difficult at work. I’ve been in my current position since August and this has been the busiest and most stressful week since I started the job. It sparked some work anxiety for me, but I made it through! Second reason being that this weekend is PACKED with hockey! I’m going to the last regular season game for the Dallas Stars on Saturday and spending all day Sunday working on a super exciting blog post for the playoffs!

To celebrate an extra exciting Friday, I want to share my favorite things from this past week!

Reality Show Recaps

I’m not sure if I’ve discussed this too much around The Life of Alana world, but I love reality shows! I am proud to say that I watched the Real Housewives of Atlanta on the day that season one premiered and haven’t stopped since… even though I haven’t watched the last two episodes of this season. ANYWAY. Along with loving reality shows, I also love listening to other people talk about those reality shows. Other than my best friend, Gracious, who also watches the Real Housewives of Atlanta religiously, I have no one else to talk to about my favorite shows! Recaps, especially podcast recaps, help me to feel like I’m getting to talk about all the details of my show, even if I’m just listening to a conversation. The only time that it can get annoying is when I’m screaming at them in my car when they’re getting facts wrong.

A few recaps you should be checking out:

MovieBitches: MovieBitches is a YouTube channel where two friends, Andrew and Avaryl, review their favorite movies, new and old. Recently (I think within the last year or two), they’ve started reviewing all of the RuPaul’s Drag Race seasons. They’ve gotten through the first four seasons, All Stars 2 & 3, and stayed up to date with seasons 9, 10, and now 11. They do such a great job with recaps! They really enjoy talking about the show together, I usually agree with their opinions, and they make super great pop culture references that I LOVE! A bonus is that their thumb nails are always super funny and eye-catching.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Recap: I found this podcast right at the end of season ten. About three episodes away from the finale, I bought the iTunes pass one weekend and binge watched the whole thing. Of course, I wanted to talk about it, so I went searching for podcasts to listen to. I found Drag Race Recap and became instantly hooked! These guys get very in depth with the show because they have a lot of insider access and are friends-of-friends with the queens. I like them so much that I’m a Patreon supporter of their podcast and get access to their Rumors show every week. (Fun fact about me: I love spoilers! I will read the plot to a movie while I’m sitting there watching it.)

Vulture: If you’re not reading Vulture, you definitely should be! It’s very organized in a way that I can focus in on the TV show recaps and not have to read about any actual news that’s going on in the world. I really love their recaps of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, but RuPaul’s Drag Race comes in a close second. If my career in hockey doesn’t work out, maybe Vulture will throw me a line and hire me to write about past episodes of RHOA.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

You thought you were going to get a blog post from me that didn’t contain a mention of hockey? Y’all should know better! We’re currently sitting on the second to last day of the regular season. There is one playoffs spot up for grabs in the East (hoping for Montreal) and the West is still fighting over standing positions.

I can already tell you that this playoffs season is going to be INSANE! And when I say insane, I mean AMAZING! For me personally, I’m not even looking at those teams that did fairly well all season and secured a playoff spot early. I’m looking at the teams that came out of nowhere and secured their spot or have been fighting up until the last day of the regular season.

I have to give a shout out to the Dallas Stars, who I refer to as my hometown team, since I live about three hours south of Dallas. I was really excited when they brought in their new coach during the summer. I love his attitude, his work ethic, and how he seems not to give two shits about what anyone thinks. I do think Dallas still has some work to do on offense – it seems like their offense is never playing the same game at the same time – but both of their goaltenders are incredible. I’m really excited to see what Dallas is going to do during playoffs – and I’m not just saying that because I HAVE TICKETS TO ALL FIRST ROUND HOME GAMES! Oh yes, I’m going to see a playoffs game IRL. That’s the ultimate Friday Favorite!

The Carolina Hurricanes have been one of my favorite teams to watch this season, besides the Arizona Coyotes. (Them being so close to a playoff spot and then missing it STILL HURTS.) Anyway, Carolina has been so much fun this season! First, that third jersey came out and it was incredibly beautiful. Then they started the Storm Surge tradition after every win, which just made my heart so happy. I get excited about little things and I believe that everyone should celebrate any achievement or milestone, big or small. I love the players’ excitement after winning each game. No matter who you were playing or if it was a close game, you should always celebrate the wins! Sure, there might be things to work on afterwards or things to discuss with the team, but you should always take a second to say “Hell yeah I won that hockey game!” The videos of fans and players reacting to securing a playoff spot made me cry so many happy tears – it’s so wonderful to see everyone so excited.

One more note about the playoffs before I shut up – the Penguins are going to the playoffs for the 13th straight season! NHL and franchise record! That’s my team, y’all. #ProudFanMoment

I thought that I would have more to talk about today, but honestly, my entire week, besides trying to keep my head above water at work, has been filled with lots of hockey and some TV watching. I think that next Friday I’ll have a lot more favorites to share with you – from spending all day Saturday in Dallas, to me possibly attending my first playoff game (date and team still TBD), and some cute, new outfits that should be arriving soon.

I hope you’ll share your favorite thing of the week with me, whether it’s a moment, TV show, or new food that you ate.

Have a wonderful weekend – and Go Penguins!
-Alana
