Happy Hockey Days, everyone! Welcome to the first day of December and the first day of Blogmas! My goal is to post on the blog every day leading up to Christmas on December 25th! Can I do it? I sure hope so! I’m currently writing this post on December 1st and don’t have any other posts completed for this month, so we’re off to a rocky start already. 🙂
To introduce Blogmas 2019, I wanted you to get to know me a little better! Instead of a traditional Q&A, I found some super random questions on Pinterest to answer for you – some silly, some thought provoking, some serious topics. Enjoy!
Do you prefer writing with a black or blue ink pen?
Black. And it has to be a Sharpie pen. But I also love purple and pink Sharpie ink pens. And I’m talking Sharpie pens, the kind that don’t bleed through. Don’t give me the thin Sharpies and call them Sharpie pens.
Would you prefer to live in the country or the city?
Ahh! Such a difficult question for me to answer. The vision in my head is a semi-small suburb town, where I can walk to a bakery or coffee shop or bookstore, but then there’s a very short drive into the city. But I also sometimes dream about living on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. (Can you tell I read too many romance novels that take place on a ranch?)
If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
I’m really interested in (and somewhat pursuing) learning graphic design. And I would like to learn how to sew.
What is your favorite item of clothing?
I’m obsessed with cardigans. You’ve probably noticed that I’m usually wearing them in most pictures. I think they’re cute and useful because I’m almost always cold. I also love Converse Chuck Taylors. I still own and wear my first pair of black Chucks that my step mom gave me when I was 12. I guess they’re vintage now?
My favorite specific item of clothing is my first Sidney Crosby jersey that my mom gave me for my 19th birthday. I hardly ever wear it, but it’s something that I would never get rid of and it has a special place to hang in my closet.
Do you like your name? Would you ever change it?
I really, really, really love my name! But it drives me absolutely insane that people can’t pronounce it correctly. Because of that, I’m very mindful to ask people how to pronounce their names and make sure I say it correctly each time I speak to them. I still have colleagues that pronounce my name wrong… after being at my job for a year and a half. I’ve contemplated going by my middle name, Rebecca, but I love Alana and I wouldn’t change it. That being said, my entire family calls me Becca or another nickname or two, so it’s only the outside world that calls me Alana.
What are you most thankful for?
Jimmy asked me this question on Thanksgiving and here was my answer: “I’m thankful for you (Jimmy, my husband). And Stark (our dog). And our home and our life. …and the Pittsburgh Penguins.” Jimmy’s response: “Mhmm. Let’s Go Pens.” I’ve taught him so well!
Do you like reading? What was the last thing you read?
I LOVE reading! I read about two books a week. I mostly read those silly paperback (now ebook) romance novels that are super easy to read and all end the same way. (Always HEA – happily ever after – and no cliffhanger. The ebook people out there will understand what that means.) If you ever need recommendations for hockey romance novels, I’m your girl!
I don’t know the last thing I read, but I did purchase a $1 murder mystery paperback at a tacky beach gift shop yesterday, so that’s what’s next on the reading to do list!
Legit, I’ll read anything that someone recommends to me that’s not sad. I get sad very easily – hello, enneagram 4 – and I try to stay away from not real sad stuff, like books or TV or movies, since I will carry that with me, even though it’s not real and doesn’t matter. I save my sad stuff for real life.
Do you like ice in your drinks?
YES! Oh my gosh, yes. Weirdly enough, my favorite way to drink Diet Coke is pouring a can into a glass of ice. So freaking good.
What is your favorite scent?
Vanilla. Sugar cookies. Vanilla cupcakes. I basically like to smell like I have been baking all day, every day.
I’ve also really gotten into fruit scents, like lemon and grapefruit. I’m really enjoying grapefruit candles right now! And I have a pink lemonade candle in my bathroom that is incredible.
Do you address older people by their first or last name?
Such an interesting question! A lot of my colleagues are older than me, and I call them all by their first names. When I worked in retail pharmacy, I would address people as Mr. or Ms./Mrs. Last Name. It honestly just all depends on the relationship I have with the person and how they ask me to address them. When I meet a friend’s parent now, I will address them as Mr. or Ms./Mrs. First Name, which is how my mom likes to be addressed. It’s a common southern thing… I think.
If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it?
Had to have a tattoo?! I LOVE tattoos, already have tattoos, and would love a lot more! I would love a Pittsburgh themed tattoo, but probably won’t end up getting one. What I will most likely get in the future is a floral ¾ sleeve on my left arm. It will include flowers from the different places I’ve lived and places that are important to me. I currently have a large magnolia flower on my left shoulder/top of my arm, which is the beginning of the ¾ sleeve.
What can you hear right now?
I’m currently listening to an episode of Gilmore Guys where they talk about episode 707 of Gilmore Girls. It was a live show in Boston and I think I might have skipped it when I originally listened to Gilmore Guys because I don’t remember any of what they’re talking about.
I can also kind of hear the music that Jimmy is listening to. We’re on our way back home from the beach and he’s listening to music in the car, while I have Gilmore Guys playing in my headphones.
What is one thing you want to overcome/conquer?
Y’all, I want to overcome comparing myself to others. It’s honestly the one big thing that keeps me from accomplishing all of my goals. I compare myself to other people in multiple ways, not just my physical appearance. I will say that I’ve put a good bit of time and effort into overcoming this. Building confidence and a support system has really helped. But I do have those bad days where I feel so defeated because I’m comparing myself to others. It’s especially bad when I’m sitting in traffic for hours every day and I login to Bumble BFF and these girls are complaining about their work from home jobs. Yeah, it’s comparison like that that ultimately drives me insane. HOW CAN YOU HATE NOT SITTING IN TRAFFIC EVERY DAY?! DO YOU KNOW WHAT I COULD ACCOMPLISH IF I WASN’T SITTING HERE GOING NOWHERE RIGHT NOW?! I’m going to shut up now…
How would you spend your ideal day?
Wake up early (between 6-6:30am) and do some type of work out and meditation. Eat breakfast and get ready for the day. Walk to a local bakery, say good morning to people I see most days, and answer email/complete boring administrative tasks at the bakery. Depending on what my job is, go back to my home office/in person office and complete the creative, hands on tasks of my job and interact with my co-workers. Complete a solid 5-6 hours of actual work that makes me feel extremely accomplished at the end of the work day. Don’t sit in traffic for hours on the way home. Cook a healthy dinner and enjoy eating dinner with Jimmy. Go to a hockey game or go to a local sports bar to watch a hockey game and socialize with friends. Go home, watch a little bit of TV, and go to bed around 10:30pm. Oh, and Stark would be able to go with me everywhere all day. Except the hockey game – he couldn’t handle that much excitement.
In my ideal world, I would have a job that had me traveling a good bit of time as well, so an ideal day would look different every day. And I would also like to work part time at a bakery where I go in at 4am to bake cupcakes that I created. Welcome to the things I daydream about. 🙂
Well, those were seriously the most random questions that I’ve ever answered. But y’all, my Sharpie pen usage is a serious hot topic for me – don’t ever try handing me a ballpoint pen.
To end today’s Blogmas post, I would love for you to answer one of these questions in the comments section! I want to get to know all of you better and this might not help, but it’ll be fun! Or, if answering questions isn’t your thing, then leave another random question for me to answer!
Happy Hockey Days, Happy December, and #LetsGoPens,
